Dr Kohlmeier Discusses Osteoporosis with Sally Field

Dr Kohlmeier spoke with Sally Field in Seattle at the Flower and Garden Show. The two-time Academy Award and three-time Emmy Award winning actress continues to promote osteoporosis awareness around the country.

Sally is sharing her story of osteoporosis, and the importance of bone density testing, safe exercise and healthy outdoor activities like gardening. Sally, now over 60 years old, says she is taking care of the 'one body she has', keeping her bones strong by taking calcium and vitamin D supplements and her osteoporosis medication. We hope that one of these years we will see Sally Field at our annual Triathlon for Osteoporosis, Westplains Wunderwoman Triathlon, in August in Medical Lake, Washington!

Award-Winning Contribution

Dr. Kohlmeier volunteered as a consultant for the senior fitness television program, SIT AND BE FIT, helping to develop their Osteoporosis Workout II, which was awarded a National Health Information Merit Award. In the workout, Dr. Kohlmeier reviews the factors affecting bone health and the role exercise plays in reducing falls and preventing osteoporosis.

Weight bearing exercise such as walking and jumping, balance exercises for fall prevention and core strengthening was emphasized not only for the elderly population but for all ages.

Medicare Fracture Prevention and Osteoporosis Testing Act

Dr. Kohlmeier and her staff were invited by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) to help fight for continued DXA Bone Mineral Density (BMD) testing. Along with many other professionals, they met with legislators in Washington D.C. such as Congresswoman, Cathy McMorris-Rodgers in support of the "Medicare Fracture Prevention and Osteoporosis Testing Act".

With cuts in Medicare and other medical insurance reimbursements for DXA testing, osteoporosis testing sites all over the country were not able to continue practicing and hundreds have closed since 2007. The "Medicare Fracture Prevention and Osteoporosis Testing Act" successfully prevented DXA BMD reimbursement from dropping down to as low as $45, half the cost of performing the test in fact.

Congresswoman, Cathy McMorris-Rodgers

Congresswoman McMorris-Rodgers represents Eastern Washington's Fifth Congressional District and understands the importance of continued access to DXA Bone Density testing in the state of Washington. Deb Fertakis, ARNP writes, "We enjoyed representing the state of Washington and Dr. Kohlmeier's efforts in fighting fracture risk. It was a pleasure to meet our Representatvie Cathy McMorris-Rogers and tour our wonderful capital.

We appreciated the leadership and support of the ISCD and Dr Kohlmeier in making the trip possible. We discussed the importance of increasing awareness of bone health with our legislators, focusing on early diagnosis by screening those at risk with DXA BMD tests, encouraging preventative lifestyle efforts with good calcium intake daily (a total of 1200 mg split up), dietary preferred, beginning in childhood and continued throughout life, along with vitamin D supplementation and exercise.
